Java plug-in Installation page
Supported Browsers :
- Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2, 6, or higher- Mozilla 1.2.1, 1.3, 1.4, or higher
- Netscape 4.76, 4.78, 6.2.2, 7
- Safari 1.0, or higher
This page will guide you through the installation of the Java plug-in 1.4 on your system.
(For an official list of supported platforms and browsers, just follow this link : supported platforms and browsers)
Follow the link to your OS below :
- Microsoft Windows OS
- Apple Macintosh OS
- Linux OS
- Sun Solaris OS
Sun Solaris OS :
Supported platforms : Solaris 7, 8, and 9Prior to installing the Java 2 SDK, you should insure that you have installed the full set of required patches needed for support of this release. To obtain patches, see the SunSolve support website. You will find a patch cluster for each Solaris operating environment platform. Each patch cluster applies to all supported versions of the Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) on the given platform.
See also Solaris Font Package Requirements for information about which font packages should be on your system.
If you are using Internet Explorer, go to the Windows installation for Internet Explorer.
Else, go to the Linux installation.
Apple Macintosh OS :
Supported platforms : Mac OS X version 10.2.3 or laterIf your OS is Apple Macintosh, you won’t be able to use the Cassini MAPS tools unless you use Mac OS version 10 (Mac OS X). Java 1.4.1 is available on Mac OS X only from version 10.2.3. If you have a 10.2 version, you can update for free to 10.2.3. Mac OS X comes with at least Java 1.3.1, so you can update your Java version for free up to 1.4.1. We recommend that you use the SAFARI 1.0 (or later) browser for best results (http://www.apple.com/safari/) because it is developed by Apple for Apple Macintosh (like Internet Explorer is the best browser for Windows because developed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows). The Safari browser should come with a 1.4.1 version of Java.
Installation process :
1) If applicable, update your OS to version 10.2.3 (or later).
2) If you don't use it yet, install the SAFARI browser version 1.0 (or later) (http://www.apple.com/safari/)
3) Update your Java version to 1.4.1 :
- either by installing SAFARI 1.0 (or later) which should come with Java plug-in 1.4.1
- or by doing a "software update" (http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/softwareupdates.html) or by downloading (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/java.html)
4) If you don't want to use SAFARI (which is a great pity), you can also use Netscape 7 http://devedge.netscape.com/ (more stable than Netscape 6). Internet Explorer has been said to be awkward with Java on Macintosh, but anyway, you can try it. Mozilla, Netscape 4.76, or Netscape 6 should also automatically use the 1.4.1 Java plugin, but if they don't, you can force them to use it by installing the MRJ (Mac OS Runtime for Java) plug-in (already included with Netscape 7). Download the MRJ plugin at http://homepage.mac.com/pcbeard/MRJPlugin/MRJPluginCarbon-1.0.1.sit
For more information about the MRJ plugin, go here : http://www.mozilla.org/oji/MRJPlugin.html.
For Netscape 6 and 7, look at this page : http://www.creativemac.com/2002/11_nov/tutorials/netscapeosx021126.htm
For more general information about Java on the Mac : http://www.apple.com/java/
5) You are done ! Start your browser again and go back to the test page : you should see "YOUR JAVA VERSION IS OK" displayed
Microsoft Windows OS :
Supported platforms : 98 (1st or 2nd edition), ME, NT 4.0 (with Service Pack 6a), 2000 Professional (with Service Pack 3), XP Home, and XP Professional (with Service Pack 1).If your browser is Internet Explorer and your OS is Windows (or Solaris), then your Java version will be automatically updated. Just go to the Automatic update page for IE, and let go with the automatic installation. If the automatic installation didn't work on Solaris, go to the “Linux installation” section below.
If your browser is not Internet Explorer (so, it can be Netscape 4.76 (or 4.78), 6, 7 or Mozilla 1.2 or later), then follow this procedure :
(Note that Netscape 7 is more stable than Netscape 6)
1) First, print this page to keep these instructions (because you will have to close your browser(s))
2) Download the Windows Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4.2_08 (j2re-1_4_2_08-windows-i586-p.exe, 15 Mo) installer in any temporary folder (you will be able to delete this file after installation). Follow the link below (under the picture), and click on "DONWLOAD" under the JRE column (not the SDK) for "Windows Offline Installation" as shown on the picture (you can also do the "Windows Installation" which will not copy the file on your disk but just do the installation)
Before you download a file, notice that its byte size is provided on the download page. Once the download has completed, check that you have downloaded the full, uncorrupted software file.
If the file size doesn't match, it probably means the file was corrupted during download. In that case, try downloading again.

3) What is your Windows version ? : If it is Windows NT4/2000 or XP, go to section a) else go to section b)
a) Windows NT4/2000 or XP : you need to have “administrator” priviledges, so :
if you don’t have this right, close the present session, and start an “Administrator” session.
if you do have “administrator” priviledges, just close all your opened browsers (and all their "objetcts" : Messenger, Composer...). Disable also (if applicable) the “Quick Launch module(s)” for your browser(s), by right-clicking on the Mozilla/Netscape icon in your system tray, as shown on the picture below :

b) Windows 95/98/Me : just close all your opened browsers. Disable also (if applicable) the “Quick Launch module(s)” for your browser(s), by right-clicking on the Mozilla/Netscape icon in your system tray, as shown on the picture above.
4) Double-click on the downloaded file to start the installation process.
5) When the installation process is finished, either :
a) restart the computer (only if asked)
OR
b) close the “Administrator” session (if you had opened one), and start again your previous session
6) Enable Java from your browser :
Start your Netscape/Mozilla browser.
Go in the menu Edit/Preferences, Select "Advanced", and check "Enable Java"
Netscape 4.76 (or 4.78) only :
- check also "Enable PluginJVM".
- Start your browser again.
7) You are done ! Start your browser again and go back to the test page : you should see "YOUR JAVA VERSION IS OK" displayed
Linux Redhat OS (or Suse), or Solaris, with Netscape 4.76 (or later), 6 or 7, or Mozilla 1.1 (or later) :
Supported platforms : Linux Red Hat 7.1 and later (Redhat 7.0 has some issues and should be updated to 7.1, at least), and Suse 8.0 (and later). Better on Gnome, KDE and KWM window managers. (should be ok for kernel v2.2.12 and glibc v2.1.2-11 or later).Check your version of glibc using the following command :
ls /lib/libc-*
1) First, print this page to keep these instructions (because you will have to close your browser(s))
From now on, in the following text, replace
<jre> with j2re-1_4_2_08
2) Download the Linux (or Solaris) Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4.2_08 self-extracting installer (<jre>-linux-i586.bin, 14 Mo) in any temporary folder of your choice (you will be able to delete this file after installation). Follow the link below (under the picture), and click on "DOWNLOAD" under the JRE column (not the SDK) for “Linux self-extracting file” (or Solaris) as shown on the picture :
Before you download a file, notice that its byte size is provided on the download page. Once the download has completed, check that you have downloaded the full, uncorrupted software file.
If the file size doesn't match, it probably means the file was corrupted during download. In that case, try downloading again.
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
3) Close all your opened browsers. Disable also (if applicable) the “Quick Launch module(s)” for your browser(s), by right-clicking on the Mozilla/Netscape icon in your system tray.
4) Installation is easy, just follow these instructions : If you have root privileges, do the “root installation” (Java will be enabled for everyone using the computer), otherwise do the “personal installation” (Java will be enabled only to you) :
a) Root installation
Log in as root (su).
Create the directory where you will install Java : it should be something like /opt/java (or /usr/local/java, or /usr/java).
Move the downloaded JRE file in the /opt/java directory.
If the file is not “executable”, then make it so : chmod +x <jre>-linux-i586.bin
Execute it : ./<jre>-linux-i586.bin
A text message is displayed on the screen, just accept the license by typing “yes”. Then, the extraction proceeds (in the current directory).
You can delete the original downloaded file.
The extraction has created a <jre>/ sub-directory.
- For Nescape 4.76 (or 4.78) only :
Put this line at the end of the general startup file /etc/csh.login (or /etc/csh.cshrc, or /etc/bashrc or /etc/profile) :
setenv NPX_PLUGIN_PATH /usr/lib/netscape/plugins:/opt/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns4
(Replace /usr/lib/netscape/plugins with your Netscape plugins path, and replace /opt/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns4 with your Java plugin path for Netscape 4)
Take care not to write ns4/ but ns4 (without the ending "/" as it won't work just because of this !!!)
The NPX_PLUGIN_PATH will then be set automatically for all users. It will help Netscape 4.7 (useless for Netscape 6/7 or Mozilla) to find the Java plug-in
Set this variable for the 1st time, by typing : source /etc/csh.login
(you will never need to do this again)
- For Netscape 6/7 and Mozilla 1.2 (and later) only :
Go to your browser plugins directory (/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins or /usr/local/mozilla/plugins, or /usr/lib/netscape/plugins or /usr/local/netscape/plugins).
(If applicable, remove all existing link to another java version from this folder : rm *java*)
From this plugins/ folder, create a link (attention, don’t copy, just make a link) to the Java plug-in.
The Java plug-in version to link to depends on your gcc version. To know your gcc version, type :
gcc –version or
rpm -q gcc
If the answer is 2.x.x, (for example 2.9.3) then do the following link :
ln –s /opt/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
But if the answer is 3.x, do the following link instead :
ln –s /opt/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
(don't forget the "." at the end of the line)
(For Solaris, just replace “i386” with “sparc”) :
Exit from root (exit)
Go to last step (step 5).
b) Personal installation
Create the directory where you will install Java in your home, for instance ~/java
Move the downloaded JRE file in this directory.
If the file is not “executable”, then make it so : chmod +x <jre>-linux-i586.bin
Execute it : ./<jre>-linux-i586.bin
A text message is displayed on the screen, just accept the license by typing “yes”. Then, the extraction proceeds (in the current directory)
You can delete the original downloaded file.
The extraction has created a <jre>/ sub-directory.
- For Nescape 4.76 (or 4.78) only :
Put this line at the end of your personnal system startup file ~/.login (it could also be .profile, or .cshrc, or .bash_profile, or .bashrc depending on your shell) :
setenv NPX_PLUGIN_PATH ~/.netscape/plugins:~/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns4
Take care not to write ns4/ but ns4 (without the ending "/" as it won't work just because of this !!!)
The NPX_PLUGIN_PATH will help Netscape 4.7 (useless for Netscape 6/7 or Mozilla) to find the Java plug-in.
Set this variable for the 1st time, by typing : source ~/.login
(you will never need to do this again)
- For Netscape 6/7 and Mozilla 1.2 (and later) only :
Go to your personal browser directory (~/.mozilla/ or ~/.netscape/)
In this directory, create a “plugins/” sub-directory (if it doesn’t already exist).
(NB : if the directory already exists, remove all existing link to another java version from this folder : rm *java*)
Go in this plugins/ sub-directory.
From here, create a link (attention, don’t copy, just make a link) to your personal Java plug-in.
The Java plug-in version to link to depends on your gcc version. To know your gcc version, type :
gcc –version or
rpm -q gcc
If the answer is 2.x.x, (for example 2.9.3) then do the following link :
ln –s ~/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
But if the answer is 3.x, do the following link instead :
ln –s ~/java/<jre>/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so .
(don't forget the "." at the end of the line)
(For Solaris, just replace “i386” with “sparc”) :
5) Enable Java from your browser :
Start your Netscape/Mozilla browser.
Go in the menu Edit/Preferences, Select "Advanced", and check "Enable Java"
Netscape 4.76 (or 4.78) only :
- check also "Enable PluginJVM".
- Start your browser again (yes, you have to restart your browser twice, it is a known Netscape 4.7 bug).
6) You are done ! Start your browser again and go back to the test page : you should see "YOUR JAVA VERSION IS OK" displayed
